The African Outlet

4942 Third Street, San Francisco, CA

You are welcome to The African Outlet! We opened our door first in 1989, on Divisadero Street, San Francisco, in a space accommodating three people maximum - truly, an African stall. In 1984, a storefront became available in Hayes Valley, Octavia Street; we moved and settled for nearly 20 years.

In that time we nurtured our beginnings to manifest a dynamic performance group, The African Outlet Experience, participating eighteen years in the San Francisco Carnaval Parade, bringing vibrant African spirits and ambience to the streets of San Francisco. We have danced and drummed for El Cerrito’s Fourth of July oneWorld Music Festival and through the Fillmore District for the Juneteenth Parade. The African Outlet also has developed and participated in programs celebrating rites of passage, Black History Month, Kwanzaa and events honoring African arts and fashion for schools and community groups.

Shifting neighborhood climate made moving from our ‘family corner’ at Octavia and Ivy a necessity. After emerging from a brief residence in storage, we opened our doors in Bayview, our current home - at 4942 Third Street, at Quesada. Already The African Outlet has contributed to Black History Month and community pride events. We have initiated a series, “an Afternoon at The African Outlet’, an intimate gathering at the store, featuring an artist or performer, taking place every two months. We’re back and we are home!

From conception, The African Outlet has, and always will be, synonymous with the qualities of authentic, traditional, and unique, and African items of so many categories - masks, sculpture, fetish, items for ceremony, fashion, fabrics, hanging art, accessories, adornments, oils, and incense. We invite you to our ambience of Africa, in all of its many layers, colors and expressions.

You are welcome!
